Passed away peacefully at Guelph General Hospital on Tuesday, August 22, 2023, surrounded by his five loving daughters and family.
He is predeceased by his parents Maatje (d. 2012), Cornelis (d. 2017), and bro-thers Dingeman (d. 2007) and Johannes (d. 2022). He is survived by his siblings David and Elizabeth, the two loves
of his life Sharon (m. 1968-1988) and Christina (m. 1997 - present) and his five daugh-ters Sharon Ann (Dave), Cynthia (Pat), Susan (Jeff), Janeen (Shane) and Amy. He will be missed by his grand-children, great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.
Jan was born May 31, 1948, in Holland when he immigrated to Canada on a cargo ship at six weeks old with his parents and twin brother Dingeman. They landed in Montreal and travelled to a small town out-side of Guelph. They were ready to move back to Holland when they met another Dutch family who took them in. Later they put down roots on Water Street where Johannes and David were born then moved to Mary Street where Elizabeth was born. In 1971 the family found their forever home on Sleeman Avenue.
Jan was a hard working and well respected man. Through-out his career, he owned Jan's Cartage, was the General Manager at the Royal Hotel and owned Woodlawn Bowl. He was a busy man and still found time to enjoy many passions from flying planes, wood working, coaching and family. He always appreciated everyone he met, and many became great friends.
Friends will be received at WALL-CUSTANCE FUNERAL HOME & CHAPEL, 206 Norfolk St., Guelph, Wednesday, September 6, 2023, from 5 p.m. - 8 p.m. A private family interment will follow at a later date. Arrangements entrusted to WALL-CUSTANCE FUNERAL HOME & CHAPEL (519-822-0051/www.wallcustance.com).
