Dec 26, 1939 - May 3, 2024 Robert Greenspan passed away peacefully in St Catharines. Bob was predeceased by the love of his life, Ruth Fields, his sister Naomi Greenspan, and his parents Sam and Frances Greenspan. He is survived by his brother Roy Greenspan (Aila), his niece Stella, and the Fields and Lavery families. Bob is fondly remembered by his friends Michael and Christine Gillespie and their sons, who were as dear to him as family. Bob was born in the Bronx, New York, and he spent much of his childhood on Long Island before studying at Hofstra University, The New School for Social Research, and the University of Toronto. Bob's acquaintances were many. He attended Hofstra at the same time as James Caan, Christopher Walken, and Francis Ford Coppola. He had the pleasure of taking a graduate class at The New School with the legendary philosopher Sidney Morgenbesser. He watched the 1960 presidential debate on television with none other than Eleanor Roosevelt. And he corresponded with several accomplished writers, conductors, and composers. For almost 40 years, Bob was a devoted partner to his beloved Ruthie, with whom he enjoyed films, books, and music. He was an articulate and thoughtful connoisseur of classical music, about which he was staggeringly knowledgeable. He had a scholar's understanding of music history and a fanatic's enthusiasm for great performances. Often, he would program an evening of music for Ruth and himself, choosing each piece with a particular aesthetic effect or lesson of music history in mind. Robert's family would like to thank all the people who helped care for him at home and in the St Catharines General Hospital. As they will know, Bob was always grateful for any kindness towards him, and we are grateful to you for attending to his personal and medical care. A small memorial ceremony for family and close friends will be held in St Catharines where his ashes will be reunited with Ruth's. And in Bob's memory a tree will be planted at the Arboretum in Guelph.
