Mar 4, 1931 - Feb 17, 2025 Born Edna Usher in Banbury, England in 1931, daughter to one of England's only female pub owners, Edna Toth was a force of nature. She could pull a pint, fire a rifle, pilot a plane, and build a go-cart, whistling all the while. Her house was where all the kids wanted to be. An award-winning journalist, Edna was a passionate advocate for those with less power and privilege than she. She campaigned to end the corporal punishment of children in schools, for free dental care for seniors and children, for the rights of women and the voices of people who are homeless. She was a long-time NDP supporter, labour activist and Chair of the Peel Poverty Action Group (PPAG). Always on the move, Edna really hit her stride in retirement, founding Tough Times, a social justice newspaper in Peel, receiving her BA in Women's Studies from the University of Toronto at age 75, a Queen's Diamond Jubilee Medal for community service, and Mississauga's Citizen of the Year Award at age 80. Predeceased by her husband, Mike with whom she enjoyed correcting editorial errors in the Toronto Star, Edna was fond of saying she loved all her children equally, Anna (Lexi) of Guelph, Dave (Carolyn), Chris (Pam) and Charles (Jen), and her grandchildren Jordan, Samantha, Erica, Jacob, Sarah, Rachel, Justin, Brenden, Cameron, Avery and Brady. Unsurprisingly, Edna exhibited extraordinary strength to the end. With her final words, she corrected our grammar. Edna passed peacefully at Georgetown Hospital on February 17, just shy of her 94th birthday. Edna's dynamism and quick wit live on in us all.
