Sep 15, 1955 - Apr 17, 2025 It is with deep love and profound sadness that we announce the passing of our hero Gary Coates, who left us peacefully on April 17, 2025, at the age of 69. Born and raised in Toronto, Gary had a lifelong passion for sports. He grew up playing hockey and cheering for his beloved Toronto Maple Leafs. His talent on the ice led him to the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where he earned a hockey scholarship and graduated in 1978. In 1981, he married the love of his life and began a successful 40 year career where he earned the respect and friendship of colleagues. Above all else, Gary was a devoted family man. He took immense pride watching his sons play sports and excel in life. He was without a doubt, their biggest fan. Gary will be remembered for his quiet strength, generous heart, and the laughter that filled every room he entered. His wisdom, compassion, and unconditional love touched all who knew him. A true gentleman, the world just felt like a better place with Gary in it. Gary is survived by Diane, his wife and best friend of 44 years, and his cherished sons, Steve (Bailey) and Dan (Brittany). He was a devoted "Bubba" to his treasured grandchildren Riley and Carter who were his absolute pride and joy! Gary also leaves behind his much-loved brothers, Steve (Lynn) and Dean (Hilary), and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his loving parents, John and Shirley Coates (née Smythe). The family extends heartfelt thanks and love to Dr. Monica Austin of Guelph for her 35 years of care and dedication to Gary and the family, for which are eternally grateful. Also to the staff of Cambridge Memorial Hospital wing A2 for their exceptional compassion in end-of-life care, and to the team at the William Paulter Centre Day Program, whose companionship Gary deeply appreciated. In accordance with his wishes, cremation has taken place. A celebration of life will be held at a later date. As an expression of sympathy, memorial donations can be made to either the Alzheimer Society of Canada or Canadian Cancer Society.
