Fremantle young gun Murphy Reid has been rewarded for his brilliant rookie season by becoming the fourth Dockers player to win the Rising Star award. Despite the impressive first game, Reid wasn’t nominated until Round 6. Adelaide’s Dan Curtin and Brisbane father-son Levi Ashcroft were the other leading contenders, but Reid ended up being a runaway winner. Reid polled five from nine of the 10 judges, with former Collingwood legend Nathan Buckley the only to not give the Docker maximum votes. Buckley gave Curtin five votes, Demon Harvey Langford four, Reid three, young Cat Connor O’Sullivan two and gun Bomber Archie Roberts one.
