Henry Edison Wattenbarger went to be with Jesus on Sunday, May 4, 2025. He was at his home in Brock, Texas, surrounded by his loving family. Henry was born to Henry Clyde and Ada Buttram Wattenbarger on February 15, 1937, in Meigs County, Tennessee. He graduated from McMinn County High School in Athens, Tennessee. He went on to graduate from Athens State College in Athens, Alabama, with a Bachelor of Science degree in physics. He was married to Esther Hall Wattenbarger. Henry's career began at Arnold Engineering Development Complex in Tullahoma, Tennessee and he retired as a Senior Scientist from IBM with 29 years of service. Henry worked on the U.S. space program from the Gemini days through the Skylab program and had numerous patents for robotic and machine vision components he developed for IBM. He lived in Tennessee, Florida, Texas and New York. Henry and Esther moved back to Texas when he retired. In his retirement, Henry worked as an electrician, well pump repairman, home inspector, but his most important job was as Grandpa to all his grandchildren. Henry was a devout Christian and loved to discuss how science and creation go hand in hand. He taught the young married couples Sunday School class for many years at Prospect Baptist Church in Fayetteville, Tennessee. He was a long-time member of the First Baptist Church of Dennis. He was a reader, thinker, tinkerer and avid gardener. He loved cars and loved working on them, especially British cars. He could repair anything. Henry always had the tool you needed and the expertise to teach you how to correctly use it. Henry was predeceased by his parents, his first wife Gearldine Shope Wattenbarger, sister Frances Harwell Womac, brother Jacob Reece Wattenbarger, nieces Ann Womac Webb, Connie Womac Coleman, Margie Wattenbarger Davis, and daughter Cathi Rodgers. Survivors include his wife of 37 years, Esther Hall Wattenbarger ; daughters Karmann Wattenbarger Goff and Jimmy of Weatherford, Texas, Cynthia Rodgers Nymeyer and Lynn of Amarillo, Texas; sons Jim Rodgers and Jennifer of Brock, Texas, Pat Hall and Carol of Kissimmee, Florida; grandchildren Kayleigh Goff Langford and Justin of Brock, Texas, Evan Goff of Fort Worth, Texas, Connor Goff and Gabriela of Aledo, Texas, Blake Rodgers and Chelsea of Amarillo, Texas, Callie Nymeyer of Amarillo, Texas, Leland Sproul and Nikki of Georgia, Layla Sproul of Georgia, Sam Hall of Dallas, Texas, Holly Rodgers, Jason Rodgers of Brock, Texas, Katie Rodgers; thirteen great-grandchildren; niece Poppy Wattenbarger Stiner; nephews Danny Wattenbarger and Stacy Wattenbarger Funeral service will be on Saturday, May 10, 2025, at 11am at First Baptist Church of Dennis in Dennis, Texas.
