The Controlled Parking Zone (CPZ) is part of Greenwich Council’s Sustainable Streets scheme, which aims to reduce car use and improve the local environment, but many residents say it will have the opposite effect. Marco, on behalf of Greenwich residents, also criticised the lack of alternatives to car travel in the area. He explained that public transport access is poor in many of the neighbourhoods affected, making the CPZ an unfair burden. Greenwich Council said the proposals are part of its Sustainable Streets initiative, designed to encourage walking, cycling, and public transport use to reduce air pollution and traffic, and improve road safety. "Any revenue generated from parking permits is ringfenced to fund transport and highway improvements across the borough, including subsidising Freedom Passes for older and disabled residents.
