From Player to Iconic UmpireBorn on April 19, 1933, in Barnsley, Yorkshire, Bird played first-class cricket for Yorkshire and Leicestershire as a right-handed batsman. Bird made his debut in county umpiring in 1970 and quickly rose through the ranks to officiate his first Test in 1973. He served as the Yorkshire County Cricket Club’s president in 2014 and was honoured with an MBE in 1986 and an OBE in 2012 for his services to cricket. Fond Farewell and TributeColin Graves, chairman of Yorkshire, described Bird’s passing as a sad day and praised him for being a brilliant man integral to the fabric of Yorkshire cricket. Yorkshire CCC described Bird as a "national treasure" whose legacy of sportsmanship, humility, and joy will live on through generations of admirers.
