On Tuesday, the St. Louis County chapter of the NAACP released a statement opposing the St. Louis County Council’s proposed resolution honoring the “life and legacy” of Charlie Kirk. The founder of Turning Point USA, Kirk, was assassinated last week while debating students at Utah Valley University. “While we unequivocally condemn the violence that ended his life,” the NAACP’s statement read, “we cannot ignore that Mr. Kirk’s public record is defined by rhetoric that undermined civil rights, dismissed the struggles of marginalized communities, disrespected African American women, and spread division. Councilman Mark Harder is expected to introduce the resolution, which aims to honor the life and legacy of Kirk at the county council meeting Tuesday night. True civic honor should be reserved for those who advance unity, protect democracy, and expand opportunity for all people—regardless of race, gender, religion, or background.”Tyler Robinson, 22, was later arrested in connection with the assassination.
