(Image: Newsquest)Its historyThe land that is now Callowland Recreation Ground originally belonged to the Earl of Essex, who purchased it in 1881 before selling to Watford Borough Council in the early 20th century. Originally it was earmarked as housing for workers moving to Watford, however the recreation ground was established in 1910. The children's play area and bowling green followed in the 1930s, while the 1960s brought tennis courts which sadly no longer exist. While brilliant as it is, there is one area in which the Callowland Recreation Ground of today could be improved.
