Before I reveal the findings of my research, let’s briefly revisit the question: What makes SuDS “sustainable”? A useful framework for this is the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDGs), which provide a globally recognised structure for measuring progress toward sustainable development. Unlike conventional drainage systems, SuDS use natural processes such as bioretention, filtration and bioaccumulation to capture and treat runoff. Innovation in SuDS is already happening, with startups and innovators developing more nature-based infrastructure and sustainable drainage technologies.
