Reform UK’s deputy leader has said the party would axe Northern Powerhouse Rail (NPR) and any other high-speed rail schemes in the north if it was to gain power of the government. Writing in a foreword to Policy Exchange’s new paper, ‘Instead of highspeed rail Northern transport schemes that will work’, Reform UK deputy leader Richard Tice stated the party believes voters in the north do not want high-speed rail lines. This new Liverpool to Manchester high-speed rail line would run from Liverpool Lime Street through Liverpool Gateway, Warrington Bank Quay and Manchester Airport and finishing at Manchester Picadilly, which would be redeveloped with further extensions in mind. The government has not publicly commented on the Liverpool to Manchester Railway Board’s proposal. It is currently unclear whether government’s new plan for NPR will incorporate the Liverpool to Manchester Railway Board’s proposal or not.
