Heart failure in cats and dogsCongestive heart failure occurs when the heart cannot pump blood effectively, leading to fluid buildup that may leak from blood vessels. Arterial thromboembolism, the formation of blood clots that travel through the bloodstream, can occur in cats with advanced heart disease. Unlike in cats, the most common sign of congestive heart failure in dogs is a persistent cough alongside difficulty breathing.
