RALEIGH — North Carolina state Sen. Bobby Hanig (R-Currituck) announced his candidacy for the state’s 1st Congressional District on Sept. 3, touting conservative leadership and the “America First Agenda.”“I am proud to announce my candidacy for United States Congress and the first Congressional District of North Carolina,” said Hanig in a press statement. Hanig defeated Democrat Tess Judge (55% to 45%) in 2018 and Democrat Tommy Fulcher in 2020 with more than 64% of the vote. Rep. Don Davis (D-Snow Hill) is in his second term in the 1st District seat and is seeking reelection. The National Republican Congressional Committee (NRCC), chaired by Congressman Richard Hudson (R-Southern Pines), targeted Davis during the 2024 election cycle, and the Democrat has unsurprisingly landed on the NRCC’s 2026 list. Cook Political Report has labeled the 1st District race a toss-up.
