Postal Service has offered the City of Maricopa a new contract that could keep the city’s library-based post office branch from closing later this month.
The auxiliary post office, a Contract Postal Unit located inside the Maricopa Library & Cultural Center, is currently scheduled to close Sept. 27 after USPS informed the city its existing contract would not be renewed.
City spokesperson Monica Williams confirmed that officials received a letter from USPS on Tuesday suggesting the possibility of keeping the unit open.
The library unit is open on Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., but the Hathaway Avenue post office is closed on those days.
InMaricopa asked both the city and USPS for that new contract and how it will differ from the current contract.
