Icelandic flag carrier Icelandair is to retire all of its Boeing 757-200 aircraft painted in the Vatnajökull glacier livery, clearing the service of its ‘flying glacier’ after eight years in the skies. The last flight of Icelandair’s Boeing 757 in the ‘Vatnajökull’ glacier livery took place on September 21, 2025. The flight marked the end of service for the special livery, which was launched in 2017 to celebrate Icelandair’s 80th anniversary and honor Iceland’s largest glacier. Icelandair’s aircraft typically feature five tail colors: boreal blue, magenta, sky blue, yellow, and green, each symbolizing aspects of Icelandic nature. With the retirement of the Vatnajökull glacier livery, one special scheme remains in service: the “Hekla Aurora” Boeing 757-200, introduced in 2015 and inspired by Iceland’s northern lights.
