By far the best review I’ve read so far, and I agree with most of your points about the ending. But the main issue here is the artwork and storytelling mastery exhibited here. Up here in Québec, we would get Marvel comics in a translated black & white format, where I could revel in the mastery of incredible drafsmanship and inking superimposed on extraordinary panel breakdowns; add to that our grander exposure to European comics, and the art of BWS immediately stood out. And thus we have here his masterpiece. Every page is an attention-grabbing feat of stylistic cross-hatching masterclass and clair-obscur bravado, backed-up by a fascinately strong composition skill that just pulls the reader in, and never lets him/her off. By the way, your malaise about the racial black hoodoo stereotype never crossed my mind. It’s probably a socio-demographic thing; up here it could have been a native aboriginal/Inuit stereotype I guess… which could be seen as typecasting, anyway, every race/country/people has its own form of metaphysical lore, so let’s not stick on that. In conclusion, a must-buy for any fan of the comics form.
