Derby City Council leader Nadine Peatfield made the suggestion during an important speech about city centre public safety at a full council meeting in the summer. Incidents include a fatal stabbing at a Derby city centre bank and – also on St Peter’s Street – a daylight robbery of a pawnbrokers shop. Councillor Peatfield said at the meeting in July: “I am also working with the police to introduce a knife amnesty bin in the council house reception. In response to a question asked by Conservative councillor Ged Potter, Councillor Peatfield replied in writing: “The suggestion to install a knife amnesty bin in the council house was just that, a suggestion.
