Daniel Hughes, 30, of Curzon House in Saltney, pleaded guilty at Chester Magistrates Court to stealing the two bottles of beer worth £10 at the Hoole Road Co-op store on July 9 this year. Catherine Higham, defending, told the court that Hughes had multiple mental health issues and was now living in 24-hour supported living conditions in Saltney where he had a key worker. They said that at his last attendance on September 17, there was a plan to assess his mental health further but that he was sober ‘which was a big step for him given his addiction to alcohol’. “He has discharged himself from the Countess of Chester in order not to miss his court date. “He is settled at Curzon House but he does have mental health issues.”Magistrates gave him a 12-month conditional discharge and ordered him to pay the £10 back to the Co-op and also a court surcharge of £16.
