A police therapy dog was killed in a head-on car crash in Tewksbury, Massachusetts, Tuesday morning, officials said. Both drivers in the crash on Whipple Road were hurt, but excepted to survive, according to Tewksbury police. One of the drivers was a Wilmington police clinician who handled the dog, a 3-year-old Bernedoodle named Zena, according to that department. Pupa said Zena joined the Wilmington Police Department when she was 8 weeks old, and has been with department clinician Samantha Cavanaugh ever since. As a therapy dog, she visited schools, attended community events and worked with people in Wilmington with behavioral, mental and developmental health issues, as well as people dealing with addiction, police said.
