For centuries, the Garden of Eden has existed on the hazy border between myth and memory. A 1690 map illustrated by Joseph Moxon entitled “Paradise or the Garden of Eden.” On this map, the Garden of Eden is located on the right, in the land of Assiria. Archeologists hypothesize the Garden of Eden’s true location lies in Mesopotamia, near the Tigris and Euphrates rivers. In this light, the Garden of Eden may not be a single location, but a poetic reflection of an entire world that once flourished between rivers. For many modern theologians, the Garden of Eden is best understood not as a geographical location but a symbolic narrative.
