The findings, detailed in a study published in Geophysical Research Letters, are raising new questions about Saturn’s upper atmospheric dynamics and the role of its magnetosphere in shaping these mysterious structures.
Just below that, a strange four-armed star pattern showed up in the stratosphere, uneven and puzzling.

These regions are notoriously difficult to study due to their weak emissions, making this one of the most detailed views ever obtained of Saturn’s upper atmosphere.
The researchers plan to continue monitoring Saturn’s upper atmosphere with JWST, hoping to catch the moment these structures evolve—or disappear entirely.
