Image Photo: WCC The World Council of Churches (WCC), Sabeel, and the Christian Schools Secretariat co-organized a prayer service at the Greek Catholic Melkite Church in Old City Jerusalem on 23 September. The WCC Jerusalem Liaison Advisory Group helped prepare the material, and participated in the service, headed by Bishop William Shomali. Church leaders from Catholic, Orthodox, and Protestant churches participated, as did eight Christian schools—comprising nearly 400 students—from inside and outside the Old City. The service centered around the theme for the World Week for Peace in Palestine and Israel, “We must give account,” taken from Hebrews 4:13. The week aims to encourage people of faith to pray for, and work towards, an end to Israeli oppression and allowing both Palestinians and Israelis to live in peace. Resources—including social media cards, a liturgy, prayers, stories, and reflections—are available for download.
