The Lithium Link to Alzheimer’s
[]
Psychology Today: News
Source: Sumaid pal Singh Bakshi/Unsplash+A new study in Nature demonstrated a link between the mineral lithium in the brain and Alzheimer’s disease.
Of 27 metals tested in brain tissue, only lithium levels differed between healthy, mildly cognitively impaired, and Alzheimer’s brains.
A specific formulation of lithium (lithium orotate) outperformed lithium carbonate (more commonly used therapeutically) in mice.
Lithium carbonate can also harm kidneys and thyroid at high levels, whereas lithium orotate did not (in mice).
If you are like me, you may be wondering if there is any way to boost our lithium levels.
