As of this writing, Israel has breached the ceasefire hundreds of times, by some estimations, and continues to occupy south Lebanon, past the initial negotiated date of their withdrawal. In South Lebanon, tobacco is lionized as nabtit al-muqawama, “the crop of resistance.” Underwriting life in war and occupation, tobacco vividly exemplifies a resistant ecology.
