WASHINGTON — A group of 10 organizations filed a federal lawsuit that could challenge the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) recent revisions to the Meat and Poultry Products Effluent Limitations Guidelines (ELG) for wastewater discharged by meat and poultry processing and rendering facilities. Environmental groups continue to argue that the rollbacks would permit increased pollution from slaughterhouses and rendering plants across the United States. Meat trade associations continue to support the EPA’s recent move under the Trump Administration and its potential benefits to meat processing throughout the United States. The meat and poultry ELGs currently apply to about 180 of the estimated 5,300 meat and poultry facilities nationwide. Following the recent lawsuit by environmental groups, the American Association of Meat Processors (AAMP) responded to the EPA’s recent move.
