WASHINGTON — On Sept. 21, the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) announced that a new case of New World screwworm (NWS) has been detected less than 70 miles from the US-Mexico border in Sabinas Hidalgo, Nuevo León, Mexico. According to the agency, this case is now the northernmost detection of NWS since the current outbreak began. Before this detection, the previous northernmost case appeared on July 9, 2025, in Veracruz, Mexico, which is approximately 370 miles farther south. Since July, USDA, alongside Mexico, has actively monitored nearly 8,000 traps across Texas, Arizona and New Mexico. Currently, USDA is analyzing the new information related to the Nuevo León case and is considering releasing sterile flies in the region if necessary.
