US President Donald Trump signed an executive order on Monday to “designate” the antifa movement a “domestic terrorist organization” after the shooting of conservative activist Charlie Kirk in Utah, Reuters reported. A Justice Department official said the designation opens tools to subpoena banks, trace wire transfers, and track foreign and domestic funding. Just days after Kirk’s killing, the US Justice Department scrubbed an inconvenient study from its website concluding that far-right extremists have killed nearly three times more Americans than any other domestic terrorist group, The Guardian reported. Trump first sought to designate antifa a terrorist organization during the 2020 protests. A San Diego jury this year convicted two men linked to antifa of conspiracy to riot during 2021 street protests.
