In the past, Oregon only considered new names upon request, but earlier this year, state lawmakers voted to speed up the process of renaming parts of the state that bear offensive labels. The Oregon Geographic Names Board — a volunteer committee of historians, educators, geographers and others — is leading the work. The board has identified 91 locations across the state with names deemed racially or ethnically offensive. The names include Dead Indian Hill in Southern Oregon, Coon Point on Sauvie Island, in Multnomah County and Uncle Tom Slough near Clatskanie, among several others. Proposals can be submitted online, and must follow certain guidelines: names should be pronounceable, unique, and not honor a living person.
