Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger said Sunday they will withdraw from the International Criminal Court, calling it an “instrument of neo-colonialist repression,” the BBC reported. “The ICC has proven itself incapable of handling and prosecuting proven war crimes, crimes against humanity, crimes of genocide, and crimes of aggression,” the leaders said. The court, established in 2002, has jurisdiction to prosecute genocide, crimes against humanity, war crimes, and aggression. The Sahel states have accused the ICC of targeting less privileged countries while ignoring abuses elsewhere. The leaders of Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger all seized power in coups that took place from 2020 to 2023.
