A concerning increase in suicide deaths across Namibia was revealed this week by the Minister of Health and Social Services, Dr Esperance Luvindao.
Speaking at an event for World Suicide Prevention Day, Luvindao disclosed that between April and August, a total of 112 Namibians died by suicide.
Furthermore, she emphasized the importance of promoting mental health and called for advocacy for policy change to prioritize mental health, increase access to care, and provide support for those in need.
“The ministry recognizes the urgency of this crisis and remains steadfast in its commitment to suicide prevention,” she added.
According to the minister, suicide prevention is not solely the responsibility of the Ministry, “ It requires a whole-of-society approach”.
