The US Secret Service dismantled a network of electronic devices near the UN General Assembly in Midtown Manhattan that could have disabled cell towers and halted emergency calls, officials said Tuesday, Forbes reported. The devices were concentrated within 56 kilometers of the UN headquarters during the ongoing assembly. “This network had the potential to disable cellphone towers and essentially shut down the cellular network in New York City,” Matt McCool, the special agent in charge of the Secret Service’s New York field office, told AP. Officials said the network included more than 300 co-located SIM servers and 100,000 SIM cards across multiple sites. Early forensic analysis indicates the devices were used for communications between nation-state threat actors and known individuals.
