The Ministry of Health and Social Services (MoHSS) has declared a measles outbreak in the Opuwo District, Kunene Region. As of 12 September, ten of the twenty suspected cases have been laboratory-confirmed, with all cases reported to be in stable condition and no deaths. According to national guidelines, an outbreak is officially declared when two out of five suspected cases are confirmed in a lab. While measles is a vaccine-preventable disease, a high percentage of the confirmed cases in the current outbreak were not vaccinated. The MoHSS provides two doses of the measles vaccine to children as part of its routine program: one at nine months and another at 15 months.
