Harold Dennis “Dickie” Bird, the iconic cricket umpire who became a household name across England and beyond, died peacefully at his home at the age of 92, according to a Yorkshire County Cricket Club press release on Tuesday. Born on April 19, 1933, in Barnsley, Yorkshire, Bird played first-class cricket for Yorkshire and Leicestershire but retired at 32 due to injury. Yorkshire County Cricket Club, where Bird served as president from 2014 until his death, called him “one of the greatest characters in Yorkshire’s history” and praised his loyalty and contributions. Bird received an MBE in 1986 and an OBE in 2012 for his contributions to cricket.
