Thousands of people fled their homes Tuesday as Super Typhoon Ragasa, packing winds of up to 137 mph (220 km/h), moved across the South China Sea toward Hong Kong and China’s southern Guangdong province, Sky News reported.
Authorities cancelled flights, shut schools and businesses, and urged residents to prepare for the storm’s landfall, expected on Wednesday between Zhuhai and Zhanjiang, according to China’s National Meteorological Center.
The Hong Kong Observatory classified Ragasa as a “super typhoon,” warning of destructive winds exceeding 115 mph (185 km/h).
In the Philippines, the storm has already killed at least three people and displaced more than 17,500 others due to flooding and landslides.
Across Hong Kong and Guangdong, residents taped windows, stacked sandbags, and secured homes and businesses ahead of Ragasa’s arrival, which forecasters call one of the region’s strongest storms in recent years.
