Earth Sciences New Zealand has upgraded its ageing high performance computing (HPC) HPE hardware with new technology as part of its Cascade upgrade.
The system uses HPE’s Cray XD2000 hardware, which is built for AI and simulation workloads, to accelerate the research firm’s environmental science and precision of meteorological forecasting.
According to HPE, which has partnered with Earth Sciences NZ for seven years, the upgrade delivers a threefold increase in computational power for researchers to run several AI-powered simulations, generating “more accurate weather predictions” as a result.
“This upgrade with HPE Cray XD2000 marks a huge leap forward in our ability to understand and predict the environment around us,” said Earth Sciences NZ chief scientist of advanced technology Dr Jess Robertson.
Additionally, the energy supplied to the CDC data centre, where Cascade is based, comes from 100 per cent renewable sources.
