A new study suggests that following a green Mediterranean diet can lower protein levels in the brain associated with aging. But there’s a variation on the Mediterranean diet that may also do your brain health a major solid. The study participants followed one of three diets: A standard calorie-restricted Mediterranean diet, a classic Mediterranean diet (without calorie restrictions), and the green Mediterranean diet, which included green tea and Mankai, a tiny leafy green. The green Mediterranean diet is usually a plant-based or plant-forward version of the classic Mediterranean diet, which emphasizes fruits, veggies, whole grains, seafood, and healthy fats. While more research is needed to study this link between the green Mediterranean diet and brain aging, it definitely offers some literal food for thought.
