New research has attempted to establish why a brutal massacre during the English Civil War has been largely forgotten by history. The site of a Royalist garrison in Nottinghamshire, Shelford Manor was besieged by Parliamentary forces on 3 November 1645. The Siege of Basing House, which served, like Shelford, as a Royalist garrison and was overrun by Parliamentary forces. Parliamentary forces led by Colonel John Hutchinson and Colonel-General Sydenham Poyntz attacked it when Stanhope refused to surrender. ‘The subsequent burying of the Shelford story is perhaps a reflection of both sides’ shame and embarrassment at the bloodshed and viciousness of the supposedly “civil” Civil Wars’, Appleby added.
