Joy Oladokun at Blue NoteNov. 19. 8PM and 10:30PM. $54.99 (The early show is SOLD OUT) Joy Oladokun’s music easily mixes elements of pop, R&B, folk and rock. Many of her songs deal with the idea that happiness isn’t just gonna fall in your lap, and as a queer woman of color, who left the church she grew up in because she felt she was not entitled to be who she was, she often expresses empathy for the marginalized. Her song, “Changes,” acknowledges troubled times, but reminds us that, as the lyrics say, “life’s always been a little dangerous.” Fans of nominative determinism may well feel that Joy is aptly named. Joy Oladokun plays on Nov. 19 at Blue Note.
