Andover - Andrew (Andy) Girdwood died peacefully in his sleep at home after a valiant struggle with heart and kidney diseases. Born on 'Girdwood Lane' to Andrew and Margaret (Peg), Andrew grew up in Deer Creek, PA. He played football and made lasting friendships at Westminster College, then moved to Long Island, New York, to start his 40-year career at Liberty Mutual. He met Bettina (Tina) Blake on a Vermont ski trip, and they married on August 24, 1968, in Nyack, New York. Andrew and Tina built their home themselves on a beautiful open field surrounded by woods, old stone walls, and dear neighbors in 1971. Their daughters, Deborah and Emily, have fond memories of being with their loving dad, especially when he was working outside. As a young family, Andrew and Tina found a circle of friends at the North Andover Country Club. Over the decades, the group played sports and games and celebrated many good times together. In retirement, Andrew and Tina enjoyed wonderful trips with friends and family. Andrew took special pride in gathering around his fireplace. Called "Skip" by the grandkids, he loved playing games and puzzles and sharing his passions for math, science, music, and classic cars. He found joy each summer with extended family at Rockywold Deephaven Camps in New Hampshire. We have endless memories of him diving into Squam Lake and enjoying the dock and the view. Andrew leaves behind his wife Tina, daughter Deborah and granddaughters Ivy and Ursula, daughter Emily (Craig Allen) and grandchildren Astrid, Stella, and Skyler. He is survived by his sister Gail Hutchinson and her children Susan Presseau (Tony Goudy) and Cara Presseau (Judith Ryan). He was predeceased by his nephew Jeff Presseau and will be missed by Jeff's wife Christy Presseau. He will also be missed by nephews Stephen Markoff and Matthew Markoff (Shannon Harper), and all of the extended families. He is remembered always for his hard work, for loving his time with family and friends, and for being so good to us. A memorial service will be announced later for family and friends.
