In rich countries like the USA, hunting will decline because the richer and better-fed the population, the more they lose touch with nature and the source of all human resources. When your food comes wrapped in the supermarket and your only contact with wildlife is looking at it, hunting (often hard unrewarded effort) soon loses its appeal. In Africa, however, controlled and sustainable trophy hunting is the only way to make wildlife pay. If hunters pay to hunt, farmers and communities will raise wild animals. Without trophy hunting, wildlife is eradicated as worthless because it competes for food, kills farm stock or vectors agricultural diseases. Where crops are grown, all the wild animals and the vegetation are removed and replaced with inappropriate foreign farming methods. Thus, trophy hunting is the only way to conserve habitat and wildlife, while providing a living (and cheap or free protein) for the locals. It is a pity that there is such a powerful public campaign in rich countries (taking advantage of public disinterest or ignorance) to ban even properly controlled trophy hunting in Africa. Where hunting is allowed and controlled in Africa, wild animal numbers are increasing. Where hunting is banned, the wild animals are disappearing. Hunting still has its uses in Africa, as it did once upon a time in the USA.
