On the heels of KVMR 89.5 FM’s move into its new downtown building comes word the radio station — and Nevada City — has been chosen to host a summit of community radio leaders this May. It will be one of six regional summits sponsored by the National Federation of Community Broadcasters (NFCB), and Nevada City is by far the smallest city hosting one of them. Approximately 200 community, college and alternative radio stations belong to the organization, which was formed in the 1970s. Kane strongly makes the case for the importance of small town stations like the eclectic Nevada City station. “It’s easy to cover major urban areas with many radio choices, but rural areas don’t have that luxury,” she noted.
