Ten years ago this week was one of the brightest moments in KVMR 89.5 FM history, even if the circumstances were dim. Normally, non-profit, non-commercial stations can only raise money for their own operations on air unless the FCC grants a waiver. Nearly 500 callers donated a total over $60,000 throughout the day to Katrina relief groups. “We suspect this might be one of the largest spontaneous fundraisers ever in Nevada County,” KVMR Program Director Steve Baker said at the time. “A legendary New Orleans heritage music broadcaster, WWOZ was forced off the air by the hurricane,” recalls Baker now.
