When you’re thinking of a Christmas music special, The Grateful Dead aren’t exactly the entertainers that normally would come to your mind. But they’ll be front and center stage for a 12-hour Dead marathon on Saturday, December 19th from noon to midnight on eclectic Nevada City radio station KVMR. Only there won’t be any Christmas carols, and, nope, not even a holiday musical favorite, according to producer/organizer Richard Dunk. “It’s an early present for our Dead fans and those folks not into Christmas music,” notes KVMR Program Director Steve Baker. And Dunk goes all the way back to the free-form format of legendary Sacramento rock music station KZAP to get his inspiration for the marathon.
