Dumpstaphunk, New Orleans’ reigning kings of funk music, made a stop in Grass Valley ontheir west coast tour with Trombone Shorty, who appeared at the venue the following night. Distinguished by the presence of two bass players, Nick Daniels III and Tony Hall opened in abass duel that set the deep funk machine in motion. Daniels and Hall traded lead vocal dutieswith keyboardist Ivan Neville, son of Aaron Neville, with all three harmonizing pristinelythroughout the show. Ian Neville, son of the late Art Neville, provided his signature steadyrhythm guitar grooves and fluid lead fills, with Tony Hall occasionally trading his bass for guitarand firing off solos from the Hendrix school of pyrotechnics. Dumpstaphunk is a band that should top any funk fan’s “Do Not Miss” list.
