Network Rail is partnering with engineering supplier WSP to improve flood planning and responses. The UK network was affected by more than 1,200 floods in 2023/24 which was the worst on record according to NR. Network Rail expects the trend to continue. “Railway embankments were never designed to be flood defences, and are not classed as such, but they often still act that way for communities. Along with WSP, it aims to create the Flood and Coastal Risk Management Framework to being more standardisation and greater knowledge of potential problems across the network and help improve readiness and resistance to floods and coastal erosion.
