Electrification of approximately 86 miles (140km) of railway will be delivered by Network Rail, with completion expected by 2029. ScotRail’s new fleet of 69 electric and battery-electric trains will follow in 2031, replacing 97 of its current fleet. It will also be electrifying some sections of the Borders railway. Although passive provision was included for the full Borders Railway, no commitment has been made yet to complete the full line. Whilst it is early stages of the procurement process, ScotRail are anticipating the new trains to be longer, higher-capacity units.
