56009 was finally sold for scrap in 2013 but then acquired by UKRL and then sold to GBRf in March 2023.
It was added to the ‘69’ programme at the expense of one of the two fully operational Class 56s that GBRf still had in its fleet.
Following the end of the Class 66 production line, the Class 69s were built as a cheaper alternative to securing new traction for GBRf, although it has now opted for new Stadler Class 99s.
