The Cumbrian Coast Line is expected to remain cut in half until Spring 2026 due to the condition of Bransty Tunnel floor. Network Rail has now said the one-kilometre-long (0.6-mile) tunnel will be closed into next year as engineers develop plans to address ground conditions which are complicated by the discovery of historic mining activity. Northern is running services from Carlisle to Whitehaven and between Barrow and Corkickle either side of the tunnel. Phil James, Network Rail North West Route Director, said: “Our experts have spent a great deal of time examining the data and having it reviewed by peers in the industry. They all agree that this is the right thing to do while further investigation can be carried out and a specialist plan put in place.”
