Dietary Habits Independently Associated With Osteoporotic Fracture Risk

Lifestyle factors, including skipping breakfast and eating a late dinner, may be independently associated with risk for osteoporotic fracture, according to study findings published in the Journal of the Endocrine Society.
Investigators in Japan explored the association between lifestyle habits including smoking, alcohol consumption, exercise, gait speed, sleep, and diet and the risk for osteoporotic fracture.
Patients diagnosed with osteoporotic fractures or osteoporosis were excluded.
Lifestyle factors associated with higher risk osteoporotic fractures were:Smoking (adjusted hazard ratio [aHR], 1.11; 95% CI, 1.06-1.17);Skipping breakfast (aHR, 1.18; 95% CI, 1.12-1.23); and,Eating a late dinner (aHR, 1.08; 95% CI, 1.04-1.12).
Late dinner had a significantly higher aHR for humerus fractures (aHR, 1.12), vertebral fractures (aHR, 1.07), and hip fractures (aHR, 1.10).
